Young Leaders - what's in it for you?
The Young Leaders’ Scheme is a training scheme available to Explorer Scouts. It gives young people the opportunity to gain valuable leadership and volunteering skills, as well as the experience by working with younger members of the Movement.
In order to demonstrate this, the Scouting Movement have had the Young Leaders’ Scheme externally recognised by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) as a Development Programme. The ILM is one of the UK’s leading providers of leadership and management qualifications and the accreditation shows the quality of the Young Leaders’ Scheme to any external organisations that Young Leaders might apply to in the future.
As a Young Leader you are a valuable asset to 2nd Wimborne Scout Group. Not only can you offer great assistance as part of the leadership team but you are likely to be the leaders of tomorrow, shaping the Movement and lives of other young people. As a Young Leader you form an important part of the leadership team of any younger section, bringing fresh ideas, techniques and plenty of enthusiasm.
Becoming a Young Leader in 2nd Wimborne Scout Group, or elsewhere within the District, provides amazing opportunities to enhance leadership skills, makes you more employable and to gain valuable experience that will help you if you decide to continue volunteering as an adult. As a Young Leader you wear a beige shirt or blouse, and the District's neckerchief (blue with white trim).
It's a position of responsibility that's challenging but fun, and it makes a real difference.
Young Leaders attend the meetings of the section that hey wish to work with. In addition to this they are also required to attend the District Young Leader workshops to complete the required training modules. The missions are completed with their sections within the 2nd Wimborne Scout Group.
Young Leaders are aged between 14 and 18, and come from all kinds of backgrounds:
- You could be completing Scouting or Guiding awards
- You might be completing the volunteering section of your Duke of Edinburgh's Award
- You could have joined especially for the training and experiences that being a Young Leader provides
